Water Pollution Facts for the United States

 

  • Over 73 different kinds of pesticides have been found in groundwater which we eventually use to drink. 
  •  Americans use over 2.2 billiion pounds of pesticides a year, which eventually washes into our rivers and lakes; some of which are used as drinking water sources.
  • Most stormdrains discharge directly into lakes and streams with no treatment or filtration at all.
  • Mercury is found, to some level, in almost 50 species of fish and shellfish.
  • The average American consumes about 15.3 pounds of fish and shellfish a year.

Tips for reducing water pollution:   

  • Don't throw trash, chemicals, or solvents into stormdrains.
  • Inspect your septic system every 3 - 5 years.
  • Use non-toxic cleaning materials.
  • Don't over-use fertilizers and pesticides on your lawn.  Make sure you follow the directions on the bag.
  • Wash your car on a grassy area instead of in the driveway where water can wash into a stormdrain.
  • If you do your own oil changes, take the used oil to an auto repair shop where it can be recycled or disposed of properly.
